kollam bypass

A review meeting headed by Public Works Minister G. Sudhakaran at the Kollam collectorate on Thursday decided to install street lights along the Kollam bypass.

According to the project report sanctioned by the Centre, the 13-km bypass from Kavanad to Mevaram has streetlights only on three bridges, main junctions, and approach roads. The Minister has instructed the authorities concerned to expedite steps to install street lights in an area over 9 km.

The Minister has directed to form a committee with District Collector as the convenor for the same and start work on a war footing. Mayor, PWD - National Highway Division executive engineer, and Electricity Board executive engineer will be the other members of the committee.

“Street lights should be installed on both sides of the bypass along with traffic signals to ensure road safety. The bypass will be thrown open for traffic only after all such systems are in place. The State government will provide the fund needed for the installation of street lights in places not covered in the project report. The contractors have informed that the work will be completed in a month,” said Mr. Sudhakaran.

According to PWD - National Highway Division officials, the construction of bridges at Kavanad, Neeravil, and Mangad are over. Road widening and tarring work from Mevaram to Kallumthazham have also been completed. While Bituminous Macadam (BM) work on the newly constructed stretch from Kallumthazham to Kavand has been completed, Bituminous Concrete (BC) work in 6 km will be over by next month. Road marking work and the installation of sign boards and crash barriers are yet to start.

The construction of bus bays and shelters are progressing at Kavanad, Kureepuzha, Neeravil, Kadavoor, Mangad, Ayathil, and Palathara. The renovation work at major junctions, including Kavanad, Kadavoor, Kallumthazham, Ayathil, and Mevaram are currently in the last phase.

Ministers G. Sudhakaran, J. Mercykutty Amma and K. Raju visited the major points of the bypass on Thursday to assess the progress. N.K. Premachandran, MP; M. Naushad and N. Vijyan Pillai, MLAs; and Mayor V. Rajendrababu were present.
